We Continue Walking as He Sheds His Light
Psalm 119:130 The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the just is like the shining sun that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.
Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
The world tells us to build our life. Get your education or training, find a mate, get the house, raise the family, work, retire, and then if you have the money and energy, enjoy life. Actually, very few follow that exact order, but most of us have an idea of how a life should be structured.
In the “milestone” way of thinking described above, there are certain resting places and plateaus built in. For example, once you find your spouse, that particular search is done. When you have kids, you are in the child-rearing stage, and life reaches a kind of plateau as you work hard, lose sleep and move from changing diapers to becoming a chauffeur. Then there might be the “empty nest” stage when a couple readjusts to having it be just the two of them again.
These are normal life phases, to be sure. But while we experience them as steps with beginnings, middles, and ends, the Lord looks at our lives differently. Of course He is with us along every step of the way, and He provides the grace and wisdom needed as we end one phase and begin another. (The author is especially grateful for child-rearing wisdom for someone who never had a baby in his life before!)
But His heart for us—and His provision—is for us to keep on growing spiritually through it all. To keep on walking forward as He shines His light on our paths. Psalm 119:130 (above) can also be translated “the unfolding of Your words gives light,” which more strongly indicates a progression.
Proverbs 4:18 (above) also indicates a continual forward movement, one made possible by light that shows the way. And it also suggests that the act of moving forward spiritually supplies even more light for the next step. And to imagine the famous visual of Psalm 119:105 as someone standing still with a light in his hands is ludicrous—the light is to enable the person to keep moving forward.
We are never to let down our lights. No matter what stage of life we are in, no matter what natural stops and starts make up our lives, we are to continue to move forward in Him. There are moments of rest, of course, and times of refreshing. But there are no plateaus in Him where everything needs to stop for a while. It’s His plan that we continue to grow spiritually through all the phases of life, getting to know Him more and letting Him work through us to an ever-greater extent.
Sometimes we stop pressing in when we’ve received pretty much everything we wanted. That’s a tragedy. There is always more light available, and a bright path to be discovered. Let’s keep pressing on to know the Lord (Hosea 6:3).
Prayer: Father, be the glory and lifter of my head here. When I feel stuck in my life, show me the path to keep on moving in You. Thank You for Your word that illuminates my heart and the path before me.
