From Strength to Strength

Philippians 3:12a-14 …but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 6:9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

James 1:12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Spiritually, we are either progressing or regressing, growing or stagnating. Living things are supposed to grow. Many times we grow unhindered. But in that process of growth, we are occasionally going to hit barriers. Not all of those barriers are because of sin or a lack of faith. Some barriers are in front of us, in fact, for just the opposite reasons.

Some hurdles arise before us because we are finally ready to go over them. We are finally strong enough to resist the devil so that he will flee. Perhaps one or more of Satan’s mental/emotional constructs has finally been broken, and we can hear God in places we couldn’t before.

Perhaps we are running toward God in an area where we used to run away from Him. Perhaps Romans 8:28 has finally caught fire in our hearts, and we’re looking at many things differently. Perhaps we finally have the proper support around that we’ve needed to break through. Perhaps now, after walking with Jesus and watching others do so, we believe something we never did before.

There may have been an old fear that finally gave way to faith, after many years of walking with God and reading His word. Maybe we finally forgave something or someone, and we see the power of forgiveness in a way we never did before. Maybe we finally got some healing, and we are able to push through barriers that would have held us back yesterday.

We may have hit a growth barrier not because of something wrong, but because of many things right, and because it’s finally God’s time!

God is a great trainer, a great general, and a wise strategist. Describing the man whose heart is set on pilgrimage, David writes in Psalm 84 that he “go[es] from strength to strength” (v. 7). That is God’s plan, that we go from strength to strength. You may not be feeling that at the moment, but God is planning the next breakthrough for you right now. The bigger victories just take more time, more strength, and more arrangement, that’s all. Hang in there, keep walking by faith, and let Him continue to prepare you for the next breakthrough.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the promise of victory. Thank You that You always know what You’re doing, and Your word is always true. Do what You need to do in me to bring me from strength to strength.
