Honoring Marriage, Part 1

Hebrews 13:4a Marriage should be honored by all….

Deuteronomy 24:5 When a man has taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war or be charged with any business; he shall be free at home one year, and bring happiness to his wife whom he has taken.

Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.

Mark 10:6 But from the beginning of the creation, God “made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife.”

Ephesians 5:31-32 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Today’s entry is not for the married, the hope-to-be-married, or the single. It’s for everyone. Marriage, a reflection of the love of Christ for His beloved people (among many other things), is being assailed in an unprecedented manner. Married, hope to be, or happily single—we all need to get God’s perspective on marriage and obey Hebrews 13 and honor marriage in our lives.

The first thing we need to consider is God’s view on marriage. Clearly, even from just the scriptures above, it’s important to God. He created it in the first place, and has made it the foundation of our society. He gave provision for men in ancient Israel to refrain from war or any business that would take them away from home for a full year to better establish the marriage. He spends a lot of time in the New Testament telling husbands, wives, and children how to behave with one another.

Of course, nothing comes close to the truth of Ephesians 5—that marriage was created and designed by God to be a picture of the love that Jesus Christ has for His church. All we need to do is look at that truth, coupled with the stability that marriage brings to society and child raising, and it’s easy to see why the enemy is so intent on destroying it. If he can hurt people, destroy relationships, damage society, and distort a picture of the love of Jesus, all at the same time, that’s a great incentive to aim the forces of hell against marriage.

We need to make sure that we are not part of that attack. We need to see the devastating effect of the breakdown of marriage, and the idea of marriage, around us. This is not a political statement; it’s addressed completely to the heart.

No matter what our parents experienced, no matter what we have seen, no matter what we might have experienced ourselves, marriage is to be honored by all. We need to side with God—not man, not experience—and proclaim the worth and goodness of the first institution created by God.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for disparaging statements I’ve made about marriage. Help me to see marriage with Your eyes and Your heart. Thank You that You have given us a picture of Your love for Your church, right here on this earth. May I honor that image of Your love, no matter where I am personally in relation to marriage.
