Breaking Through to Love, Part 5

Leviticus 26:7-8 You shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight; your enemies shall fall by the sword before you.

Joshua 23:10 One man of you shall chase a thousand, for the LORD your God is He who fights for you, as He promised you.

Deuteronomy 32:30 How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had surrendered them?

On the subject of loving one another, we’ve looked at the Lord’s instructions, His examples, His empowerment, and the wondrous witness it is to a dying world that needs to see a demonstration of His love among His people. The last thought, the last reason for loving, is purely strategic. It relates to warfare, and to Satan’s battle against us.

We need to remember that our enemy doesn’t hate us as much as he hates God. Certainly he knows that if he hurts us, that hurts God. But beyond that, he is primarily invested in keeping His kingdom, and will resist whatever begins to compromise that.

The devil can do the math. If one of us can damage him to the human equivalent of 1,000 men, and two can put 10,000 to flight, can we see why he is so interested in making sure we stay unloving and divided as a Church? Whether one uses the math of Leviticus or Joshua, it’s clear that there is great, great spiritual power in our loving unity. Our enemy works overtime to keep that unity from happening.

Think of the power presented here! A loving husband and wife, united in serving the Lord and raising their children. Loving and supportive friends who help one another put an end to the enemy’s victories in their lives, and replacing them with God’s healing and attributes. A loving church, putting offenses aside and forgiveness front and center, and impacting a community with God’s saving grace and power. Think of what the Lord could do to combat the many physical and moral scourges of our age if we could come together in love.

We have great power at our disposal. It’s called the love of God. May we always recall that this is not a matter of sentiment, or ultimately, even human harmony. It’s about striking down the power of the enemy with our God-received unity and love.

Prayer: Father, when I’m tempted not to love, help me remember who is doing the tempting. May my love for Your people bring both great destruction to Satan’s kingdom, and great growth to Yours. Amen.
