Psalm 121, Pt. 4

Psalm 121:3-5 He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.

He will not allow your foot to be moved (v. 3). Are you ever afraid that you won’t “make it” if you try to move forward spiritually? Or if you try to break a habit? Or start a new one? We so easily forget that He is with us—He is our helper all along the way. Every step we take in Him is secure. Our own steps, directed by our own wisdom and will, can be unsure at times. Every step in Him, however, is safe and protected.

He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. (vv. 3b-4) On the way to Jerusalem, you had to sleep in the hills, with the awareness of what lurked in the dark in those dangerous places. But you could rest securely if you knew that God was your helper, because God Himself never sleeps.

Do you sleep peacefully like this? The reason we can sleep at night is because God never does. He keeps us safe during the day (where “the sun shall not strike”) and at night, where the moon shines over all activities. It is all under His hand of protection.

The Lord shall preserve [keep] you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore (vv. 7-8). The deists were wrong—God didn’t get the world going and then take a major step backwards in terms of involvement!

The psalm says that He keeps us! “Keep” and “preserve” (the same word in the Hebrew original) is used six times in this short psalm! He is actively listening to us, always open to our cries, always watching over us. Even when there is danger, He preserves us in it and through it. His hand may be invisible to us, but He is always there, helping and keeping us, making sure that nothing stops us on our journey to Zion. What an exciting “replay” this will be for us in heaven, to see all the keeping and preserving that went on of which we were unaware!

So look unto the hills without fear. There may be dangers, toils, and snares. But He is there, too, actively helping, actively preserving, actively working to free us from all snares and help us on our way.

Prayer: Please remind me all along the way how very close You are, and that You have designated Yourself as my Helper and Keeper along the way. I am never alone, and never left without help. Thank you that I can rest because You never do.
